Former French Olympic gymnast Gael Da Silva passed away this Tuesday morning in a tragic car crash, prompting fans worldwide to express grief.

At 41, Da Silva, also known as Gaou, left behind his wife, Camille, and three children: Hugo (12), Jules (9), and Lou (6). Gymnastics Now’s official account took the heartbreaking news to Instagram on Wednesday.

“French Olympian Gael Da Silva died Tuesday morning in a car accident. He was 41,” the post read. “Da Silva leaves behind his wife, Camille, and their three children. Sending our condolences to Da Silva's family, friends, and all within the French federation.”

Da Silva’s career highlights were winning bronze in the floor exercise during the 2012 European Championships in Montpellier. And then partaking in the 2012 London Olympics for France, which finished 8^th in the men’s event.

This devastating loss left the gymnastics world mourning, with fans expressing emotional tributes over social media.

Fans Mourned for Gael Da Silva

Following his retirement, Da Silva reportedly worked in the sports equipment industry. However, his contribution to the sport remained unquestioned, and fans expressed what a heartbreaking loss it was to the world of gymnastics.

“A Heartbreaking Loss,” wrote a fan. Another added, “How very sad and tragic.. So sorry for your loss.” “Oh no, that’s terrible news. So sorry,” another stated.

Romanian former artistic gymnast and Olympian Steliana Nistor, who competed during the same timeline as Da Silva, also added a comment, echoing the same mournful sentiment as others.

“I can’t believe that. I competed during the same period. May god bless you, Champion.” She wrote.

Amidst the wave of condolences, fans also stood by the family, wishing them solidarity and courage to navigate through the tough time.

“Rest in peace, courage to the family,” wrote a fan. Another added, “Our heartfelt condolences to Gael’s family and friends.”
