The sports world seems to be divided right now. With sparking anger and resentment, the Ukrainian government condemned the decision of the FIG to let the Russian athletes participate.

The Ukrainian officials spoke against the decision of the International Gymnastics Federation and the European Gymnastics. Letting Russian and Belarusian athletes come back on the global stage with their flags and emblems is described as a cynical move by Ukraine.

As reported by UNN, a joint statement was released by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Minister of Youth and Sports Matvii Bidnyi opposing the decision.

“We strongly condemn the latest decisions of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and European Gymnastics regarding the admission of athletes.”

Though this latest landmark decision brought joy to both countries, Ukrainian officials argued it, pointing out how they ignored the reality.

“Such steps contradict the fundamental principles of justice, solidarity, and peace upon which international sport should be based.”

Sybiha and Bidnyi pointed out how the ground is not changed at all. Russia is still involved in illegal and unprovoked attacks. The result is innocent people losing their lives, and the country's infrastructure is ruined.

They have pointed out the harsh reality where the ongoing conflict has ruined over 850 Ukrainian sports facilities across the country. Now it is extremely difficult for their own athletes to train safely.

The Ukrainian sports community is hurt and feels it is an unfair decision. The world is completely ignoring their reality and has left them entirely unsupported. Because of this disregard, officials stated that it would give a wrong message to let these athletes back, stating exactly,

“The return of representatives of the aggressor states under national flags creates a false signal of the alleged 'normalization' of the situation.”

Finally, the Ukrainian government is appealing to the general assembly not to support this unfair play, stating,

“Sport cannot be a platform for the legitimization of aggressor states and their propaganda.”

The upcoming European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships

After the historic landmark decision of FIG to lift the ban on both Russian and Belarusian Gymnasts, the 2026 European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships will mark the first event where the change will be witnessed. The championship is scheduled from May 27-31 in the Bulgarian city of Varna.

With all the controversy going on between nations that has divided the sports community, the upcoming championship gives a perfect chance for athletes to showcase their talent on the global stage. After a gap of four years, the gymnast will return to international competition, making it already a high-stakes competition.

The five-day event will have junior and senior categories to participate in. A live tracking of scores and a complete broadcast of the event is also organised.

There is already buzz going around about how the sports landscape will change after the competition, and it will be interesting to see who will be standing at the top of the podium this time.
