Two-time Olympic champion Jade Carey confirmed her return to the mat in an exclusive interview with Olympics.com on Thursday, May 7.
After announcing her elite gymnastics comeback last month on social media, Carey has now stated that she will be competing at the American Classic next month. The prestigious tournament will take place in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from June 25 to 28.
The American Classic will be the first gymnastics event for Carey in over 14 months after competing for the last time at the 2025 NCAA Championships for the Oregon State Beavers in April.
Last year also marked the end of an incredible collegiate career for her in which she became the 13th gymnast in NCAA history to secure a “Gym Slam.” It pertains to scoring a perfect 10 on the balance beam, vault, uneven bars, and floor exercise.
In 2025, during her senior year, Carey also earned the coveted AAI award, apart from scoring four perfect 10s.
While speaking during the interview about her return to the sport, Carey said, “Pretty easy floor routine... for me... and stuff like that.” She also talked about not touching a piece of artistic gymnastics equipment during the first few months of her sabbatical.
“I'd watch the [Oregon State] girls, and I'd be like, 'Yeah, no, thanks. I'm good',” Carey added.
Jade Carey reveals planned routine for the American Classic next month
Jade Carey also spoke to Olympics.com about how her training has gone over the last few months before revealing her planned routine for the American Classic. Despite suffering a slight hip injury earlier this year, she began training with more structure.
Carey avoided doing round-offs for more than two months at the start of the year, but it did not deter her. Although the injury prevented her from working on vault at the time, she found a way to practice double-doubles on the TumblTrak after standing back handsprings.
Currently, the 25-year-old plans to begin her vault routine with a Yurchenko double full, followed by a Cheng. Training for the latter has now begun.
As for floor exercise, Carey is focusing on building her endurance while tumbling on the hard floor and continuing to make progress after recovering from injury. She said she feels “overall happy” with her training and keeps reminding herself that it is still only May.
