Emma Jean Clark could’ve graced the mats for LSU in her collegiate days. But that was until injuries marred Olympian Mary Lou Retton’s youngest daughter’s journey.
A verbal commitment to LSU since 2016 outlined what Clark’s collegiate career could’ve looked like. But severe injuries resulted in the university rescinding its scholarship offer before she could even reach the campus.
“LSU took away my scholarship due to business decisions after I got my second surgery (ankle reconstruction)," Emma shared on Instagram. “It was the worst news I had ever experienced at that age and time of my life.”
After attending a gymnastics camp in Baton Rouge in 8th grade, Clark received an offer to continue her collegiate career at LSU. But an ankle reconstruction surgery, a torn UCL, and broken vertebrae did not let that dream flourish.
But soon after, she received an invitation from the Arkansas head coach, Jordyn Wieber, to visit Fayetteville. The youngest Retton daughter subsequently joined the Razorbacks with a new scholarship offer.
Moving past the LSU Tigers, Clark completed her collegiate career as a Razorback. And amidst her resilient run, there was one piece of advice she passed on to other gymnasts.
Emma Jean Clark’s Advice to Other Gymnasts
Standing face to face with one of the grimmest moments of her career, Clark didn’t allow the sense of defeat to take over her. While following her heart to continue her gymnastics career, she advised others to do the same.
“Follow what you want your heart to do and never ever feel pressured by anyone else,” she shared in a 2023 interview with Foxy’s Leotards. “Just make sure you are always listening to what it is that your heart wants to do.”
Not only did Clark have a successful career at Arkansas, but she also acquired a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management. And both were the results of following her heart.
