The moment when Nadia Comaneci made Olympic history was undoubtedly great. But something made her recent return to Romania even greater and more emotional.
“In the small Romanian town of Onesti, people chanted Nadia Comaneci's name on Sunday as the gymnast who received the first perfect 10 in Olympic history returned home 50 years after the feat,” a recent article by France24 explained.
July 18, 1976, Montreal Summer Olympics. A 14-year-old Comaneci approached the uneven bars without knowing that moments later she’d make history as the first gymnast in Olympic history to receive a perfect score.

So, having her return to the city after 50 years was nothing less than a grand event for the people. Comaneci encouraged the crowd to do some stretches with her and then reunited with her Montreal team, walking a 15-minute trail called "The Path to Perfection.”
It retraced the young Comaneci’s steps from her apartment to the gym she trained at. The crowd relived the journey of her growing from a little girl to one of the greatest Olympians with 9 medals under her name.
But beyond the emotional reunion, Comaneci’s return signaled a new push for Romanian gymnastics.
Nadia Comaneci Is Trying to Boost Romania’s Olympic Run
The country that once clinched around 73 Olympic medals with the help of Comaneci and other gymnasts, had declined in quality and quantity ever since. However, there’s a hope of a revival of the sport.
“It's an important year for everyone to push a restart button for movement, sport, health, independence, to learn how to navigate through life and to discover your limits,” Comaneci stated to the crowd. "Onesti has a lot to offer, and we promise we'll be back.”
A new project is taking place which promises new accommodation for the gymnasts, fresh and salt water pools and a gymnastics museum. There was also a club during Comaneci’s time, which declined after 2000. But the gymnastics star is offering financial support to renovate it.
While her return itself was a sentiment for the people, Comaneci also brought in fresh hopes to restore her country to its former glory.
