Despite her absence from the mats, the Simone Biles effect hasn’t diminished at all. And U.S. junior elite Addalye VanGrinsven’s latest practice footage proved just that.
Biles, having five gymnastics moves under her name as the most decorated gymnast in history, is as natural as it gets. But the surprising part was the 14-year-old VanGrinsven being able to effectively perform one.
Gymnastics Now shared VanGrinsven's training routine on X. The video showcased the youngster going for the move, which Biles performed first when she was just 16, at the 2013 World Championships.
The Biles 1 was the first move to be named after the gymnastics icon, which involves a double layout with a half twist in the second flip. Although many have performed it with a full twist, Biles’ half twist makes it far trickier and harder.
The gymnast's other moves include distinct variations of the Biles on vault, and the Biles, Biles II on floor and beam.
As a rising name in the gymnastics world, VanGrinsven's performance of the Biles 1 proved the effect Biles still has on the sport. And if she gets it right before 16, that will be yet another historical achievement.
However, if VanGrinsven masters this move, there’ll be a bigger stage for her to present it, as she is eyeing the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026.
Addalye VanGrinsven Revealed Her End Goal
After securing a spot in the US Junior Women's National Team roster and multiple international medals, VanGrinsven’s focus is currently on a bigger goal.
“When we were talking about the plan for this year… they were like, 'You can go to the Youth Olympics,'” she told Olympics.com in April. “That's my end goal. I've always wanted that, because I feel like that will lead me up to everything else I need in the future to get to the actual Olympics.”
Set to be held from October 31 to November 13, the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar will be the first Olympic event to be held in Africa. VanGrinsven will also be among the first U.S. women's artistic gymnasts to compete at this event.
But do you think she’ll be able to make it to Dakar? Let us know in the comments.
