Simone Biles’ Former Coach Gets Real About Level Playing Field at Nationals

Apr 16, 2026, 2:30 PM CUT

Cecile Landi, the former coach of Simone Biles, is leading a revival at Georgia. She claims the days of predictable parity are over and the traditional powerhouses are now struggling to survive against rising underdogs.

Returning to college gymnastics after leading Team USA to Olympic gold multiple times, her work involves restoring the program, which has been falling behind since winning 10 national titles in 2009.

“It’s not going to be the same eight every year like it used to be,” Cecile Landi said, as per the Associated Press' Will Graves, referring to the eight schools like Georgia, UCLA, Alabama, and Utah that dominated collegiate gymnastics.

Alabama did not qualify for the National Championship in Fort Worth. Meanwhile, Simone Biles' former coach led Georgia back to the National Championship for the first time since 2019.

Landi said, “I like that it gives an opportunity to other teams. However, it makes it harder because we always have to strive to be better. It also makes it more exciting because you know you can have that chance, you can be there.”

Landi explained, “We always have to be better,” ensuring there is no room for complacency. Another part, “you know you can have,” describes how the glass ceiling effect is gone, and any team has a perfect shot at winning the title with the right strategy and momentum.

When the decimals ended the decades of dominance

Cecile Landis introduces a new reality in the NCAA where legendary programs have vanished, and technical execution across the mat hits an all-time high.

The level playing field was evident at the recent elimination of Alabama at the Corvallis and Tempe regionals, held on April 5, when their score of 197.175 could not pull them into a win against the 197.750 Bulldogs of Georgia. This thin margin would have dominated in the previous decade, but now the legacy programs cannot rely on their name to secure a spot in competition.

With the 2026 Nationals going on, the conversation is no longer around the star team but which underdog will steal the spotlight. To stay at the top, one has to innovate and outwork everyone else constantly.
