Simone Biles Left Hurt by Harsh Comments Following Recent Medical Emergency

While a severe medical emergency unfolded, some harsh media comments left gymnastics icon Simone Biles even more disheartened.

Having suffered a “near-death” experience a few days ago, the gymnast travelled to Belize with her husband, Indianapolis Colts safety Jonathan Owens and posted the photos on Instagram. But some mocking comments under that post propelled Biles to speak up.

“Ugh, these comments make me sad,” Biles wrote. “A little over two weeks ago, I experienced a serious medical emergency that could have ended very differently, and this trip has been part of allowing myself to heal & appreciate being here.”

The initial comment questioned Biles’ decision to travel, writing, “Almost died but look at these travelling selfies.” Although the 11x Olympic medalist didn’t disclose the nature of her health scare, she did mention the severity of it.

“Almost dying wasn’t on my bingo card earlier this week,” she shared on Instagram on June 6. “This was one of, if not the scariest experience of my life… I've been in bed resting this week, I’ll explain sooner or later…”

Having to explain a much-needed traveling decision after a life-threatening injury surely affected the gymnast, who always advocated for mental health. And going forward, she had a little advice.

Simone Biles' Message to Critics

Ever since the 2020 Tokyo Games, when Biles had to withdraw from several individual events due to twisties, the gymnast has been an active voice for mental health concerns. And again, she highlighted the importance of handling life with grace and positivity.

“I hope you understand that life-changing experiences can shift your perspective,” Biles added to her initial reply to the aforementioned comment. “And that you’re able to extend a little more grace to others moving forward. Have a nice day!”

However, the Olympian noted that she’s still not ready to talk about the incident. For now, Biles is focused on embracing life through changed perspectives and as she recovers while spending time with family members and loved ones.

With that being said, can you recall a similar incident that happened with another athlete? Let us know in the comments.
