A new chapter is starting for U.S. men’s gymnastics, and this time the focus shifts to Rio. With competition getting tougher and the Olympic cycle building up, the latest team announcement has already started discussions in the gymnastics world.
Recently, the U.S. men’s team secured a top finish at the 2026 DTB Pokal Team Challenge in Stuttgart, Germany, to win gold ahead of host nation Germany.
In a post shared by Gymnastics Now on X (formerly Twitter), USA Gymnastics officially confirmed its five-man roster for the 2026 Pan American Championships scheduled from June 17 to June 21 in Rio de Janeiro. The selected athletes are Kameron Nelson, Riley Loos, Yul Moldauer, Patrick Hoopes, and Taylor Burkhart.
USA Gymnastics picked a team built around depth, not just one or two star athletes. They looked at performances from the 2026 Winter Cup and the NCAA season, and chose players where multiple people can score 14.500 or higher on different events.
This matters especially when they go up against teams like Brazil and Colombia, who are strong and consistent competitors themselves. This Pan American trip is not just another competition; it’s a real test of how the team performs away from home.
After winning gold at the DTB Pokal Team Challenge with a score of 252.850, Rio will be tougher, as Brazil usually scores 1.5 to 2.0 points higher at home, especially on Still Rings. So the U.S. went with athletes who are performing well right now.
That's exactly why the selection was careful. Three of the top five finishers from the 2026 Winter Cup made the team, and most of them are hitting mid-to-high 14s, so the total score stays strong no matter what.
What is Team USA's Approach For Rio?
The U.S. is putting its main focus on Floor and Vault. Kameron Nelson, coming off Still Rings gold at the 2026 DTB Pokal, also brings a Floor D-score of 6.0+. Along with Riley Loos and Taylor Burkhart, his fast routines often lead to scores in the high 8s and 9s.
On Vault, Burkhart scores between 14.800 and 15.000, giving the team a strong start. Loos adds scores above 8.5 on Rings, helping the U.S. stay competitive early and build a total that keeps them in a strong position in the first half.
But to hold that lead, the U.S. has often found the Pommel Horse difficult in the past, and Patrick Hoopes becomes important on this event. With an average of 14.800+ and a high of 15.100 in trials, he gives the team a strong scoring base.
Yul Moldauer adds experience on parallel bars, where he scored 14.955 to win gold at the 2026 Winter Cup and finished with a 79.710 all-around silver. He usually scores above 8.8, which helps the team stay consistent in the final routines.
The scores are there, and the balance too. But Rio won't be easy. Can this team actually deliver when the pressure is real, or will Brazil's home advantage be too much to overcome?
